YK#1 Speaker

Product Design / 2022 / 1 semester
Project Overview
Inspired by the megaphone’s iconic form—where shape clearly communicates the act of projecting sound—YL#1 Speaker explores how geometry can define function. The design features two angular horn structures: a longer form that directs sound and a shorter form that integrates a light source. Through structural studies, acoustic testing, and hands-on fabrication, the project investigates how form, material, and internal mechanics can merge sound and illumination into one cohesive system.

Inspiration
Megaphone
The form of megaphone has developed over centuries, and the megaphone's shape itself embodies the function of amplifying sound.

I sought to translate that history into a modern context.
Silhouette of a bird, possibly a woodpecker, perched diagonally on a branch in a black and white design.Geometric abstract art featuring layered black and white shapes, including a central black area surrounded by white and gray triangles and rectangles.Illustration of a person with git branching structure lines and icons symbolizing pull, push, and merge actions in version control.Illustration of a unicorn head with rainbow-colored mane and a pink spiral horn on a black circular background.
Shape Study
Nine differently shaped foam and concrete texture blocks arranged in three rows on a white background.Four beige cylindrical and round ceramic or stoneware objects, shown from different angles on a white background.
Simple Shapes
I began the ideation process by refining various forms inspired by the shapes that come to my mind when I think of a speaker.
Advanced Shape Study
Specific Shapes
I explored advanced form development through laser-cut prototypes, refining multiple iterations to study proportion and structure.

From these experiments, I selected the form that best aligned with the project's purpose and crafted the final case in aluminum for a clean, durable finish.

Technical Sketch
Measurements for making
After modeling the design in a 3D program, I created detailed technical sketches to ensure precise material selection and accurate dimensions for production.
