YK#1 Speaker

Individual Study Project / 2023 / 2 months
Project Overview
The megaphone, with its long history, clearly represents how form can define function—its shape visually conveys the act of projecting sound. Inspired by this clarity, I began the ideation process by exploring the structural logic behind horn shapes. YL#1 Speaker features two angular horn forms: the longer side functions as a directional speaker, while the shorter side integrates a light source. Through this dual configuration, the project examines how geometry can guide both sound and light, merging acoustic performance and illumination into one cohesive system.
My Contributions
YK#1 deepened my understanding of mechanical structures and how Form and Function work together.Through shape studies and acoustic design, I refined the speaker’s form for optimal sound performance while aligning it with material properties and fabrication methods.By handling the wiring and internal structure myself, I learned how mechanical and electronic elements merge in to a cohesive product, experiencing the full process from design to testing.

Inspiration
Megaphone
The form of megaphone has developed over centuries, and the megaphone's shape itself embodies the function of amplifying sound.

I sought to translate that history into a modern context.

Shape Study
Simple Shapes
I began the ideation process by refining various forms inspired by the shapes that come to my mind when I think of a speaker.
Advanced Shape Study
Specific Shapes
I explored advanced form development through laser-cut prototypes, refining multiple iterations to study proportion and structure.

From these experiments, I selected the form that best aligned with the project's purpose and crafted the final case in aluminum for a clean, durable finish.

Technical Sketch
Measurements for making
After modeling the design in a 3D program, I created detailed technical sketches to ensure precise material selection and accurate dimensions for production.
